A 53-year-old man and his 45-year-old wife who returned from Dubai tested positive for the novel coronavirus infection (Covid-19) late on Monday.

District Collector Naval Kishore Ram told The Indian Express that the couple returned to India from Dubai on March 1. They did not show any symptoms but as a precautionary measure had reported to doctors at Naidu hospital on Tuesday. Their throat swabs were sent to National Institute of Virology and tested positive for Covid-19.

The District Collector said there was no reason to panic and that the administration was keeping a close watch on the situation. “We have checked their travel history and contacted several persons they may have connected with in the last few days. They have a son and daughter and family members are being quarantined at their homes. We are keeping a close watch on the situation and there is no reason to panic,” Ram said.

The official statement annoucing the two confirmed coronavirus cases in Pune.Reiterating the administration’s appeal to avoid Holi celebrations at crowded places, the District Collector said people can celebrate the festival with their families. There are five persons in the isolation ward at Naidu hospital and their condition is stable, according to civic health authorities.

A total of 117 persons have been admitted to Naidu hospital so far and 112 samples have tested negative.

According to Dr Pradeep Awate, state surveillance officer, 282 samples have been tested so far of which two from Pune have tested positive.

The Union Health Ministry is yet to confirm the two cases.
