Amazon helps nab Pulwama accused

LHI: In an important instance of cooperation by a foreign multinational in an Indian terror investigation, Amazon shared with the
National Investigation Agency (NIA) information about a buyer who used its e-commerce site to buy ingredients for the improvised explosive device (IED) that caused the Pulwama attack last year. As many as 40 CRPF personnel were martyred in the February 14, 2018 suicide strike, which led India to retaliate with cross-border airstrikes on Jaish-e-Mohammad facilities deep inside Pakistan.

Based on details of online shopping account of the buyer — Waiz-ul-Islam, a 19-year-old teenager from Srinagar — furnished by Amazon’s India office on NIA’s request, he was arrested on Friday. NIA also arrested Mohd Abbas Rather, a resident of
Hakripora village in Pulwama, for sheltering Pulwama attack conspirators including suicide bomber
Adil Ahmad Dar.

Waiz disclosed during his initial interrogation that he used his Amazon online shopping account to procure chemicals like ammonium power for making IEDs, batteries, clothing and other accessories, on the directions of Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists. He personally delivered the items to JeM terrorists after procuring the incriminating material online as a part of the conspiracy to carry out the Pulwama attack, said an NIA spokesperson.

An NIA officer told TOI that Waiz was over 18 years of age on the day of the Pulwama attack.

Rather, a resident of Hakripora village in Pulwama, is an old overground worker of JeM. He told the interrogators that he had given shelter to Jaish terrorist and IED expert
Mohd Umar at his home after the latter had arrived in Kashmir in April-May 2018. Rather had also harboured Pulwama suicide bomber Adil Ahmad Dar,
Sameer Ahmed Dar and Pakistan terrorist Kamran at his house a number of times in the run up to the attack. He also arranged safe haven for JeM terrorists including Adil and others at the house of the other arrested accused Tariq Ahmed Shah and his daughter
Insha Jan of Hakripora, Pulwama. The father-daughter duo were arrested earlier on March 3.

Thus far, five accused in Pulwama terror attack case — Shakir Bashir Magrey, who drove suicide bomber Adil Ahmad Dar to a point close to the attack site; Tariq Ahmed Shah and Insha Jan, both of whom gave shelter to the Pulwama conspirators at their house — have landed in NIA net.

Waiz and Rather shall be produced before the NIA special court at Jammu on Saturday.
